| Hi
there - my name is Phil Coleman
I am a biologist and college professor - retired. I am also a Christian.
I am making this statement here for several reasons.
Evolution is the grand unification theory of biology. It is a solid theory
whose validity is substantiated constantly by new research, discoveries, technology
and the people who are fascinated by life on this planet. It is a living theory
which experiences changes in detail as our knowledge and data base grows.
The accumulated data, facts, and information of science are valid. The
many branches of science are in agreement on these facts. Cosmologists, astronomers,
geologists, biologists, physicists, mathematicians, etc. All contribute valid
data to aid in the understanding of our planet, solar system, galaxy and universe.
As a biologist who is a Christian, my greatest rejection has come from
fellow Christians. This is grievous and hard to explain. When a Christian
attacks the truth of the sciences, this creates conflicts which should not
exist, and are harmful to both science and Christianity.
If you are a scientist who has read this far you and I know that
your truth is valid. Do not allow anyone to convince you otherwise.
If you are a Christian who has read this far consider that all
truth is God's truth, and that truth does not conflict with truth. Look back
over history and see how the Christian understanding of what is true has changed
over the centuries. Your time, energies and money are better spent on other
pursuits than trying to discredit that which is true!
If you are neither a scientist nor a Christian, do not let senseless debates
between Christians and scientists affect you. Just seek truth, whether in
science or religion, and from my perspective hopefully both.
As a biologist with degrees in natural history and ecology, I understand
the complexity and fragility of environments and ecosystems on our planet,
and our dependency on them. Because of this knowledge I feel that I have a
special responsibility to be active in protecting and preserving all species
and their environments.
As a Christian I believe that it is mankind's mandate to insure that our
presence protects rather than damages and/or destroys the complexity of our
beautiful planet.
I am not an evangelist nor a preacher. The truth of science stands on
itself, and the truth of Christianity stands on itself.
Thank you for reading some of my thoughts on a difficult subject. |
